St Josemaria Escrivá

Saint Josemaría Escrivá was a Spanish priest and the founder of Opus Dei, a Catholic institution that promotes the idea that everyone is called to holiness in everyday life. His teachings emphasize finding God in ordinary activities and viewing work and daily responsibilities as a path to faith.

Born in 1902 in Barbastro, Spain, Josemaría Escrivá was ordained a priest in 1925. In 1928, he experienced a spiritual inspiration that led him to found Opus Dei — a Latin phrase meaning “Work of God.” His core message is that holiness is not reserved for a few but is attainable by anyone who lives with love, integrity, and dedication in the midst of the world.

Throughout his life, he faced challenges such as the Spanish Civil War but remained committed to spreading the spirituality of work and daily life. Escrivá was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2002 and is remembered for his profound influence on modern Catholic spirituality.

“There is no other way: either we learn to find our Lord in ordinary, everyday life, or we shall never find Him.” — Saint Josemaría Escrivá
